Fish supply declines in Dar after weather warnin

FISH prices in Dar es Salaam has gone up after supply at the ferry market declined a day after the Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) warned of strong winds at the entire coastal belt of the country.

‘Daily News’ survey at the fish market at Magogoni showed there was a sharp decline in the supply of fish, as many fishermen did not want to risk their lives to fish in the rough sea.

Speaking with the ‘Daily News’ in the city on Monday, one of the fisherman, Mr Bakari Kombo said strong wind started blowing from yesterday morning, making fishing process cumbersome. He said fish always prefer stable and calm situation but in case of turbulence they run and hide in deep waters where fishermen with low quality gears cannot go.

He added, fishing using lump was unfriendly for the fishermen ending up getting small quantity of fish. “The situation has thus pushed up prices more than usual, where a bucket of sardines jumped to 35,000/- compared to 3,000/- on Sunday,” he said. The price for other species of fish increased to 66,000/- per container as of on Monday morning compared to 45,000/- a day before.

On her part, Ms Mwanahamisi Juma said, “Apart from high prices, but it is still difficult to get fish. I do not know what will be the price tomorrow.”

A member of an association of sellers and buyers of fish at the market, Mr Kassim Denge said as of yesterday fish were still available, though in relatively small quantity.

“So if the weather condition persists the prices will increase to the heights,” he said. TMA on Sunday said strong winds exceeding 40 km/hr and large waves exceeding 2 meters were expected across the entire coast covering at least 70 per cent of the area. Regions which fall under the TMA alert are Dar es Salaam, Lindi, Mtwara and Coast as well as Pemba and Unguja.
