Sri Lankans trains women on cutting, polishing gemstones in Tamida project

The Tanzania Mineral Dealers Association (Tamida has embarked in a programme geared to empower young women with gemstones’ cutting and polishing skills so that they can ably benefit out of mining industry.

 

 

 

Since, the programme kick-started six months ago, about 15 young women have benefited from the training on adding value on minerals.

 

 

 

The group has been trained for six months by experienced instructors from Sri-Lanka. The minister called upon Tanzania’s gemstone dealers to employ the qualified cutters.

 

 

 

One of the training beneficiaries, Beatrice Mpeta commended Tamida for coming up with the programme, saying it has opened their eyes and the redeemer to their lives. “We can be able to be self employed in the mining industry as we can be able to initiate a group.”

 

 

 

She however appealed to training facilitators to review the programme and extend the time-frame of the training package from six month to one year.

 

 

 

“We also ask the training center to be equipped with cutting and polishing equipments and facilities,” Beatrice said.

 

 

 

Energy and Minerals Minister, George Simbachawene, commended Tamida for coming up with the programme.

 

 

 

He made the remarks soon after awarding certificates for the 15 young women who graduated from the six-month training on cutting and polishing gemstones including tanzanite.

 

 

 

“The action made by Tamida to sponsor the 15 girls in the training is recommendable, and need to be emulated by other players in the mining industry, but this need to sustainable so that all young women from across the country be able to benefit out of the project.”

 

 

 

“What I know is that the training is a gateway to prosperity for young women like these,” he said, adding that after attending such training, beneficiaries will be able to create their own employment.

 

 

 

He also lauded Tamida for contributing 100m/- to develop the center by putting in place teaching and learning facilities at the center
